River Dragons Acquire Goal-Scorer Liarakos In Trade With Wolves
Columbus, GA - The Columbus River Dragons have completed a trade with the Watertown Wolves today that sees defenseman Marvin Powell heading to the Wolves in exchange for Yianni Liarakos. Undisclosed financial and future considerations were also a part of the deal between the two teams.
Powell was selected by the River Dragons as a part of the FPHL's expansion draft conducted at the league meetings in Chicago this offseason. Powell played with Danville and Port Huron last season.
Liarakos joins the River Dragons after splitting time between two FPHL teams (Port Huron and Watertown) as well as the Hungarian Erste League (top divison featuring Romanian, Austrian and Hungarian clubs). Liarakos scored 30 goals last season in the FPHL in 43 games for the Wolves and Prowlers combined (13 goals in 20 games in Port Huron, 17 goals in 23 games in Watertown).
"I've played against Liarakos many times" player/assistant coach Jay Croop said. "He's an impact player and can take over games. He's a solid addition and is the kind of player we want in Columbus."
Liarakos joins some of his former Wolves teammates that were selected by the River Dragons in the expansion draft including goaltender Jared Rutledge and forward Tim Santopaolo. Prior to turning pro, Liarakos played his junior hockey in his native Canada where he was a NOJHL first-team all-star with the Blind River Beavers registering 78 points in 54 games (39G-39A).
